rockstar : supernova

i have to say it - the name blows. supernova? c'mon. you'd think those burnouts would be able to think of something better to name their mega-super-fantabulous-lordsoftheuniverse-group other than some tired re-tread of an vaguely 80's-sounding phrase. then again, what is this series other than finding musicians from the 80's a new singer boy/gurl for the, er, 2000's. (i refuse to type the oo's. it just looks odd. bring on 2010!

but i digress. get used to it. last summer i had great fun blogging about the shows and my take on the performances. so in my own sad attempt to recapture the past (except in my case, it's only 12 months ago, not 12+ years ago) please find my thoughts and ramblings forthwith.

it was nice to see dave navarro back. these days he comes off more like a giant care-bear than a guitar-god, but i can hardly hold it against him. we'll need the balance with tommy lee sitting next to him on ye ole rockstar sofa. and brooke burke was dressed in some strange metallic dishrags. ala kiera knightly, however, brooke looks healthy, even if her hair is a tad over-done.

and the new kiddies, even though some of them look a bit riper than kindergarten. ;-)

storm large - pinball wizard
yes, she claims that's her real name. good for her. bad for her parents. but she held this song together very very well. she'll be around for a long time.

ryan star - iris
oh my good gods. i was taking short notes with a pen and paper (so i could remember names and songs for blogging later) and i had to stop myself from jamming my pen into my ear drum. my only note about this guy was, "generic radio singer".

toby rand - knocking on heaven's door
and of course this song is a classic. and of course this aussie decided to go accoustic with it. and of course it was predictable, but his voice had something really special to it. please pick something a little more out there next week.

patrice pike - somebody to love
i wanted to like her, but she seemed a bit, well, i don't know. a bit like she was trying a bit too hard to be one of the boys. however, the band told her that she seemed like she really wanted the job. so i guess maybe they are looking for a boy-singer. or at least a gurl who's not gurrly.

magni - satisfaction.
poor little icelandic buddy. his voice was deep and growly, quite different from the boy-men filling the rest of the show, but his performance wasn't really quite rock. it was ok, but a bit too cheesy and ego-rific. if he sticks around, he may improve if he's a fast study.

zayra - bring me to life
this girl is so not for this band, but she was utterly and completely captivating. her voice isn't nearly as strong as anyone else's, but i think she'd be better suited to front her own band. and better off singing songs that don't push her vocal cords quite as much. then again, if kelly clarkson can have a career with her crappy voice - this girl can too.

jenny galt - generic nickelback song (missed the title, not that it matters, they all sound the same)
again, so not right for this band. my notes for her read, "chick rock, can't sing and skirt is too short". i'm sorry vancouver. it's just not going to happen.

josh logan - she talks to angels
urh. yuck. find him a christian rock band to smile in front of.

matt hopper - yellow
for a man, has a very pretty and nice voice - but i'm thinking this is the extent of his range. i don't think he can dirty it up for the mighty supernova. (nope, still don't like the name)

dilana - lithium.
done. she's perfect. insane, but perfect. it will be interesting to see if she stays strong or fades quickly and becomes tiresome. off the top of the show, it seems like the gig is either hers or lukas' - but we haven't gotten to him yet....

dana andrews - i'm the only one
is it just me, or did that song get sung every other week last season. or was it just that every other song that dana johnson (is that her name?) did sounded like that? i really really dug this girl's voice - but i have a feeling this might all she can do.

phil ritchie - cult of personality
ok. not great, but ok. something about him reminded me of my friend frank mixed with scott weiland. random, i know.

jill gioni - piece of my heart
another case of, "wasn't this song done to death last year"? i hope dana and jill and patrice can all do something other than what they did this week. otherwise you'll see a fast exit by the females.
chris pierson - roxanne
poor bastard. how do you do that song? apparently not like he did it. i think he can do A LOT more than what he showed tonight, but i'm worried he may get an early boot.

lukas rossi - rebel yell
easily my favourite cover of the night. and easily the most developed performer of the night. hands down. lukas has been kicking around toronto for years, has a major publisher behind him and a big-time record producer helping him out. this is all good. if supernova doesn't happen for him - this will just bring it all to a boil for him. go lukas! :-)

so, to your reasoning, i'm an idiot because i didn't watch the "special" before the show.... interesting logic.

regardless - i still don't think it's going to happen.

Your opinion that "it isn't going to happen" is your own. I have no problem with your opinion.

I think you're an idiot NOT because you didn't watch the special. I find you idiotic because you have the lunacy to suggest that somebody like Jenny "can't sing" ... and the same comment (by me) would be valid no matter WHICH of the contestants you said that about.

If you're capable, here's a fact to think about. 25,000 people on the planet tried out. These 25,000 people all considered themselves singers. 15 made the cut, of which she is one. Guess what - that puts her ahead of 99.94% of everyone who tried out.

So YES, that actually DOES mean she can outsing almost anyone on the planet (as can the other 14 contestants). You putting words on the web like "she can't sing" is simply stuipd. Period.

You are either 1) a singer; or 2) not a singer. If you ARE a singer, you obviously aren't good enough for the show (or you'd be on it eh?). If you are NOT a singer, it makes you even more stupid to say "she can't sing" given that the producers who auditioned 25,000 people actually did choose her.

Alright - maybe I shouldn't call you an idiot. Maybe you aren't really dumb at all. I suppose the truth could be that you are simply one of those people who hasn't achieved much in life and gets off on insulting others who ARE out there taking action on their goals in life.

Maybe you should go and get some goals of your own.

(No I'm not her mother but I have seen her perform)

thanks for the comments rajabean and anonymous. feel free to leave all sorts of comments here - i love discussion, ideas and differing opinions.

i still don't think this is the right band for jenny galt. no offense to her. and i do think that her performance vocally was one of the weakest of the night. if, as you said, she was ill that may explain the performance. i'm more than happy to have her change my mind. i'd LOVE for a canadian female to go far on the show.

all that considered, i will stand by my right to have an opinion and my right to post those opinions/ramblings on my silly little blog.

but let's not resort to cheap shots and base assumptions about each other... that's simply stupid. period.
