live 8 in ottawa - what the...?????

a few days ago when the live 8 stuff started being announed, there was a mention that it was about 95% certain that there'd also be a canadian show. foolishly, i got excited. i don't know why, but for some bizzarre optimistic reason i thought that this could be really cool - get some great socially aware artists together for some brilliant music and a great message.

so, today i saw the proposed headliners for the live 8 show here in ottawa and wanted to yawn (that or cry, i'm not sure). bryan adams? barenaked ladies?? jann arden??? our lady peace???? fuck.

it's like the juno awards lineup 9 out of the past 10 years. just add alanis, shania, celine and avril and it's a boring cocktail of devestating proportions. why, oh why, oh WHY does canada constantly go for the boring predictible? are we as a nation truly that imagination-less? can't be.... i mean we're also the nation that gave the world leonard cohen - a VERY original and artistic thinker. even japan realizes that we have more musically than the freakin' barenaked ladies - earlier this year they put on one of the coolest canadian festivals that we've never seen (stars, metric, death from above 1979, the dears).

when will the powers that be in canada realize that we don't need to be mini-me to america? we don't have to push the boring and predictable commercial acts to the world in order to proclaim, 'see we're a world class country!'
